                        Revision 0 - 30 Aug 1999

Slayer requires minimal effort to install and use. Once you have read this
simple introduction to installing and using Slayer's basic feature set, you
may be interested in learning about Slayer's more advanced features. If so,
please contact us at the address in the FAQ about details of the printed
manual.

** Making sure your hard disc drive is clean

Before installing Slayer onto a hard disc, or other permanent non-removable
device, you should make sure it is free from virus infection. To make sure
of this, copy the !Slayer and !SlayRes applications to a floppy disc, which
you should keep UNPROTECTED. If Slayer gets infected, it will disinfect it's
self when it loads, and periodically checks it self. Once you have done this
perform a soft-boot, bypassing any !Boot structure or similar you may have in
place (consult your RISC OS user guide on how to do this) and then use the
copy of Slayer on your floppy disc to scan any hard disc drives you have, and
any commonly used media, such as key-discs, Zip discs etc... Once you have
made sure your system is completely clean, you can safely continue installing
Slayer.

** Getting Slayer to load on boot

Once you have dearchived Slayer on to the device you wish to run it from, you
can get it to run automatically when you boot you machine if you have a !Boot
file or similar system simply. From a clean booted machine, run Slayer, and
then create a desktop !Boot file, by pressing MENU over the Task Manager's
icon, going across from the 'Desktop Boot' item, and either dragging the
!Boot file somewhere, or just click 'OK' to save it in the default location.

** Scanning your hard disc drive when Slayer starts

Once you have done this, you may want Slayer to scan a path on your machine
automatically when it boots. This could either be your entire hard disc, or
just your !Boot structure. This is also simply done. Once Slayer is loaded,
press MENU on it's icon, and select 'Choices...'. This will display Slayer's
configuration window. Select the 'Start Scan' section by clicking on one of
the radio buttons to the right, and then tick 'Scan path below when loaded'.
You can then either type a path in the text box, drag a directory to the
folder icon, or drag the folder icon to a Filer window. Click 'Save' when
done. Every time Slayer loads, it will scan that path for viruses.

** Setting a password to stop people changing Slayer's configuration

If you are in a school environment, or similar, you can limit access to most
of the normal items in Slayer's icon bar menu to only those with a password.
Although this isn't utterly secure, it will circumvent most casual fiddling.
To enable it, go in to the Choices window, as described above, and then
select the 'Security', and tick the 'Hide Options' box. You can then define
a password, which you will have to type in twice to confirm it. If you don't
give Slayer a password, then you can bring up the full menu by pressing CTRL
when clicking MENU on Slayer's icon, otherwise you will have to select the
'Full Menu' entry, and supply your password.

** Defining a SlayServer and other network option

Networking is not available in the freeware edition of Slayer. If you are
interested in obtaining the Professional version, with full network and
internet support, please contact us at the address in the FAQ.
